The specialist leader is running out of road
Since I started posting about AI’s implications for the technology workforce, I have received a lot of panic-riddled messages from leaders worried about becoming obsolete.
The reality is that AI has fundamentally changed the organizational structure most technology companies are used to. It will make the specialist leader obsolete, very quickly, unless you rewire yourself into a General Manager capable of owning and running multiple departments and functions.
This is happening now, inside org charts being redrawn this year. The leaders who make this transition early will own the GM seats. The ones who wait will compete for a shrinking number of specialist roles against everyone else who waited.
